Avastha means state or status.
Planetary Avasthas describes the state or status of each planet. It helps the astrologer in determining whether a planet is able to give results or not.
Basic planetary Avasthas includes age, alertness and mood, which are
Age: 5 types
Infant(Baala) - ¼ strength
Adolescent(Kumara) – ½ strength
Young(Yuva) – Full Strength
Old(Vriddha) – Minimum Strength
Dead(Mrita) – No Strength
Planets in horoscope behave according to the above Age groups. A planet in Young State exhibits full power during its Dasa/Bhukti/Antar Period. If it is yogakaraka planet then the horoscope of a person enjoys lot of benefits and comforts.
Alertness: 3 types
Jaagrita – Awake
Swapna – Dreaming
Sushupta – Asleep
Mood: 11 types
Deepta – Glowing
Mudita – Delighted
Saanta – Peaceful
Swastha – Comfortable
Gravita – Proud
Khala – Mishchievous
Kopita – Angry
Deena – Sad
Dukhita – Distressed
Lajjita – Ashamed
Vikala – Crippled
Planets in any of the following Moods exhibit their behaviour accordingly.
How the Planets are allotted to particular Avasthas like age, alertness and mood ?
Age is allotted based on the degree in which a planet is posited in a even or odd sign.
Alertness and Mood is given based on the planet’s exaltation, neutral, friendly, inimical, debilitation signs.
Explaining about Avasthas is not possible in this single post. And moreover, I am not going to explain all the details about how they are calculated. This post is intended for a student of astrology to know what are Avasthas like an introduction. Avasthas are vast concepts and still more avasthas are present in astrology. It is a research oriented area of the subject.
Using Jagannatha Hora, free software you can check the planetary Avasthas/States in your horoscope easily. Use the following steps to check the Avasthas like Age, Alertness and Mood of planets.
Open your chart in Jagannatha Hora.
Click on “Strengths” tab above and “Other Strengths” tab below as shown in the picture given below.

There are 3 sections displayed on the right pane. Right Click in the 2nd section and Select “Basic Avasthas (age, alertness, mood)” option from the menu as given in below picture.

Now you can see the Avastha/Status, Alertness level and Mood for all the nine planets in your horoscope chart.
There are also other Avasthas called Sayanadi Avasthas which can also be checked by selecting it from the drop down menu. It shows activity of each planet. Look the picture below.
Students and researchers in astrology can explore this particular area. This will be interesting and mind blowing if used for predictions.

இவை ஜோதிடர்களுக்கு ஒரு கிரகம் பலன் தருமா தராதா என்பதை
அரிய உதவும்.
அடிபடை கிரக அவைஸ்தைகள் கிரகங்களின் வயது, விழிப்பு நிலை
மற்றும் விதம் என்பனவற்றை குறிக்கும்.
வயது: 5 பருவங்களாக பிரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது
Infant- பால: 1/4 பலம்
Adolescent- குமார: 1/2 பலம்
Young- இளமை: முழு பலம்
Old- வயதான: குறைந்த பலம்
Dead- இறந்த: பலம் இல்லை
கிரகங்கள் மேல் சொல்லப்பட்ட பருவ நிலைகளில் இருந்தால் அதற்கு
ஏற்றது போல் அதன் சுபாவ நிலை இருக்கும். ஒரு கிரகம் இளமை
பருவத்தில் இருந்தால் அந்த கிரகம் அதன் முழு சக்தியை அதன்
தசா/புத்தி/அந்தர் காலங்களில் வெளிப்படுத்தும். அதுவும், அந்த கிரகம்
யோககாரகனாக இருந்தால் ஜாதகர் மிகுந்த அதிர்ஷ்டத்தையும்,
சுகத்தையும் அனுபவிப்பார்.
விழிப்பு நிலை: 3 நிலைகள்
Jaagrita- ஜாக்ர்தா - விழிப்பான நிலை
Swapna- ஸ்வப்னா - கணவு நிலை
Sushupta- சுசுப்தா - உறங்கும் நிலை
கிரகங்களின் வேலை செய்யும் நிலை மேலே உள்ள மூன்று நிலைகளை
பொருத்து இருக்கும். ஒரு கிரகம் கணவு நிலையிலோ அல்லது
உறங்கும் நிலையிலோ இருந்தால் அது அந்த ஜாதகத்திற்கு
நன்மையாகவும் அமையலாம் அல்லது அமையாமலும் போகலாம். அது
அந்தந்த கிரகத்தின் குணங்களை பொருத்தது. உதாரணத்திற்கு, ஒரு தீய
கிரகம் சுசுப்தா/உறங்கும் நிலையில் இருந்தால் பின்பு அந்த ஜாதகர்
அதன் தசா/புத்தி/அந்தர் காலங்களில் எந்த தீங்கும் விளைவிக்க மாட்டார்
என்று அர்த்தம்.
விதம்: 11 விதங்கள்
Deepta- தீப்தா - பிரகாசமான
Mudita- முடித்தா - மகிழ்ச்சி
Saanta- சாந்தா - அமைதியான/சாந்தமான
Swastha- ஸ்வஸ்தா - சுகமான
Gravita- க்ரவிதா - பெருமை/கர்வமுள்ள
Khala- காலா - குரும்பு/விஷமம் நிறந்த
Kopita- கோபிதா - கோபம்
Deena- தீனா - சோகம்
Dukhita- துக்கிதா - உளைச்சல்
Lajjita- லஜ்ஜிதா - வெட்கமான
Vikala- விக்காலா - முடமான
கிரகங்களின் மேற்கூறிய் விதங்களில் இருந்தால் அந்தந்த விதங்களுக்கு
ஏற்றாற்போல் செயல்படும்.
எவ்வாறு கிரகங்களுக்கு வயது, விழிப்பு மற்றும் விதம் போன்ற
அவஸ்தைகள் ஒதுக்கபடுகின்றன் ?
வயது என்பது ஒவ்வொரு கிரகமும் ஒரு ராசியில் எந்த பாகையில்
அமர்ந்திருப்பதை பொருத்து ஒதுக்கப்படும். இதில் ஒற்றை மற்றும்
இரட்டை ராசிகளுக்கு கணக்கு மாறுபடும்.
விழிப்பு நிலை மற்றும் விதமானது, கிரகங்களின், உச்ச, நீச்ச, நட்பு,
பகை, சமம் போன்ற நிலைகளை வைத்து ஒதுக்கப்படும்.
